  P.S.- This is in no way a critic intended to hurt the hotel, it's a review to allow the opportunity to improve. And for those having doubts, I work in insurance and was here on work, so I have no hidden interest in giving a bad review... My motivation to write is simply because it's now 5am and I can't sleep.

  This is a fairly long review so I just want to start by putting up some useful advice to drivers: if you are arriving by car and plan to use the hotel car park I strongly advise you to put the address ‘Calle Del Gral. Gutierrez’ into your sat nav – this is main street that runs parallel to the hotel just before the pedestrianised street, and access to the hotel is down one of the smaller side streets (just drive slowly and you’ll see it). If you just put the ‘NH hotel’ into your sat nav then it absolutely will try and direct you down the pedestrianised streets. Of course I 100% recommend that you DO NOT try and park here but I will cover that later in this review….

I’ve saved the best (worst?) to last because this is a big one, and please excuse the capitalisation here: IF YOU ARE DRIVING ANYTHING OTHER THAN A MINI/COMPACT CAR DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TRY TO USE THE HOTEL CAR PARK.The car park is underground and access is via a car lift which is EXCEPTIONALLY narrow. We had a medium sized car and once were in the lift there was about 10cm of space on either side of the car. Although there is room to manoeuvre in the street above ground it is a different story when you try to exit. There is  barely any turning space in the underground garage to line your car up to drive into this narrow lift to exit. After much effort (about 10 mins of inching back and forth) we thought we had the car lined up but because it is such a narrow lift we caught the wheel arch on the lift door, which cost us about 400 euros of damage when we returned it to the rental company. This is a HUGE design flaw and a massive omission by the hotel – nowhere on the website does it state that access to the car park is via a small & narrow lift and even when we called the hotel to ask about car parking there was no warning from the staff about the narrow space and that we should not use it if we had a certain sized car. Oh also it’s not free to park there so you may as well use one of the other plentiful paying car parks around town that won’t wreck your car.

  The hotel is in a great location to walk to a lot of good historic sights. The hotel is nice and the food is good. Laundry service is expensive so bring plenty of changes of clothes

  I was unable to sleep AT ALL the whole night. It seems that it's impossible to switch off the air conditioning and it's noisier than the ones I had back in 1980. Out of utter desperation at 4am I actually took the room card out to see if without electricity it would stop but that didn't work. If that wasn't enough, the ceiling has a smoke detector with 2 blinking LED lights that simply WILL NOT STOP BLINKING and in complete darkness and eyes shut it is like being in a disco...

  My first bad experience was with the room service because it's brought to you without a covering dome, which made me thing that it had been exposed to basically everything on the way to my room from people sneezing in the elevator, hairs etc.

  1. Firstly, in the hotel room the smoke alarm is directly over the bed – it is situated on the ceiling directly over the pillows above your eyes where you lie down to sleep. The smoke alarm is fitted with 2, very bright red, LED lights. These lights flash on and every five seconds, 24 hours a day. These lights in a dark room are incredibly bright and you can see the flashing through your closed eyes. If you are in any way easily bothered by things like this when you are trying to sleep then you are not going to have a good night sleep.

  Nice clean rooms with air conditioning, very good hard mattresses and two different pillows. Welcoming staff and extra plus for water and fruit in the lobby. Only drawback is occasional noise from the streets, but not a problem. Did not try the breakfast.

  So, this is a nice hotel but I would not under any circumstances stay here again, which is a real shame because it has a lot of very good qualities: the hotel room was modern, clean and spacious, the staff were lovely and very helpful and friendly. It’s in a great location to explore Santa Cruz and is close to the main attractions.

  2. If you do somehow manage to sleep through the party lights then you are going to get another wake-up call when the sun rises. The bathroom faces into the room through a frosted glass door and frosted glass interior window. There is a small exterior window also in the bathroom and there are no blinds on any of these. The consequence is that when the sun rises it fills the bathroom with light which in turn lights up the room through the frosted glass. We tried to make a makeshift curtain using towels but the window is high and fairly inaccessible so again – another disturbance to your sleep.

  Horrible experience. I am not too picky when it comes to hotels, for me it's about location, location, location! Nevertheless, I must say that this one pushed my patience to the limit, but let's start...

  As I started eating it seems that the pasta had pieces of spaghetti from a previous cooked dinner which led me to believe that the pasta is cooked in the same cooking water as previous dinners and thus I got the cooking left-overs from someone else.
